Scientist's Work

During my research I have come across a technique widely known as ‘coral farming’ which is used to reinstall coral to damaged reefs. Scientist Dr David Vaughan is a programme manager for coral restoration at Mote and has been working for years on bringing life back to the Florida Keys where reefs have been threatened by rising temperatures and water quality. Vaughan takes small pieces of varies species of coral and farms them in pools that are set to ideal water conditions for coral to thrive. He grows them with the help of his team who monitor and determine what the water conditions will be like 100 years from now and they replant the species that show promise.

Another scientist working to save local reefs is the Founder and President of Coral Restoration Foundation, Ken Nedimyer. The difference between Vaughan and Nedimyer is that Nedimyer has noticed a huge loss in a specific species called staghorn coral. Unlike Vaughan’s work, these corals are farmed in the ocean so the conditions of their surroundings are not as heavily monitored, but they thrive never the less. Nedimyer then takes pieces of the grown coral and used a putty to secure them to the rock where coral is bare.


Now although coral farming does not address the threats to coral, it does provide a proven method for restoring reefs that are already damaged. Many non-profit organisations such as Mote and Coral Restoration Foundation are working to try and fix as best they can what we have caused. I think we all need to ask ourselves, how much longer are we willing to watch and not change?

What is Coral Bleaching?

I have done a lot more research on why coral is endangered and the process behind it was an interesting discovery. Coral is so rich in colour because algae inhabits the coral tissue, therefore they have a symbiotic relationship. Algae is the corals food source and would die with out it. ‘Coral bleaching’ happens when the relationship between the two becomes stressed due to water temperature rise or pollution, and the algae leaves the coral tissue. This causes the coral to turn white, therefore not supplying a food source for the fish.

The root of this issue lies with pollution and climate change. Humans use Earth’s resources poorly which result in a rise of greenhouse gasses, and temperature. The rise in air heat means the ocean warms as well and makes for unideal conditions for which algae can live. Runoff from drains that dilute our waste into the ocean can effect near-shore corals, as well as extreme low tides and over-exposure to sunlight.


Coral bleaching is a global issue that again, humans are at the core of. By cutting back on waste and minimising how much pollution goes into our waters means we might be able to save some of our world’s reefs. Coral provides us with 30% of our oxygen we breathe. Without it, it won’t only be the fish that suffer.

The Increasing Loss of Biodiversity - Initial Thoughts

I am overly excited about the latest project in Communication in Creative Culture at Massey! We have to look at an issue that society (or parts of society) face and more or less discuss how people react to it. One of my fondest childhood memories was when my Dad took me snorkeling in Manly, Australia. I had never seen anything as beautiful as this reef. It was so new and extraterrestrial to me, yet stunningly vibrant and tranquil.
Unfortunately, coral reefs and marine life all over the world are getting obliterated at a rapid pace. It is a relatively new topic to our society and it pains me as it is a personal upset due to that fond memory. I have therefore decided to base my study for this assessment around the loss of biodiversity.
I currently know very little about this issue, although I became aware of it when studying climate change for the previous assessment. I want to learn more about the source of this increasing problem and what can be done to improve damaged marine life and protect reefs that aren't yet affected. I will keep my research and responses up to date via this blog. There will definitely be more said on this topic.

How do we Shape the Natural World?

I was first introduced to the painting ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch in the documentary ‘Before the Flood’, Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens. The painting consists of three panels, each portraying a different stage of human interaction with Earth. The first panel is Adam and Eve, surrounded by lush greenery and plentiful creatures. The second shows overpopulation and poor use of resources. As a viewer, it feels uncomfortable to look at due to the seemingly chaotic setting. The third and final panel is a burnt landscape overrun by fire and smog. It looks like Satan’s home.

Although this piece of art is just that, there is a reality behind it that is increasingly threatening to our world daily. This issue is commonly known as Global Warming or Climate Change. It is a man-made problem that many people refuse to believe in, despite the scientific evidence surrounding it. Climate change is the cause of carbon emissions (from fossil fuels in America mainly) being released into the atmosphere, thus resulting in a rise in air temperature as these gasses cannot be discharged into space. The outcome of this is masses of ice melting, sizeable flooding and drastic weather conditions. Hurricane Katrina tore through Florida in 2005, killing many people and causing billions of dollars in damage. (‘An Inconvenient Truth’, 0.25.46.) This is just one example of the extreme natural disasters occurring over the entire planet today. “The ten hottest years on record have all occurred in the last fourteen years.” (‘An Inconvenient Truth’, 0.28.54.) Due to human use of fossil fuels consistently increasing, we are putting ourselves and our planet in a position that we may not be able to reverse in years to come. “In 2040, you will be able to sail over the North Pole” (‘Before the Flood’, 0.15.02.) The astounding part about this issue is that politicians refuse to admit climate change is legit, because they are large recipients of fossil fuel money. Any American bill that would deal with this problem cannot be passed because congress is made up of 131 individuals who earn money through companies that contribute heavily to the core issue. (‘Before the Flood, 0.27.21.’)

Basically, the American government won’t acknowledge or positively impact global warming because they don’t feel as though they have to right now. However, the government always rally behind the majority of what the people want. Everyone can make simple changes to daily life that will make a phenomenal impact to improve the wellbeing of our planet, cutting back on beef consumption for example. The beef industry is a fairly large contributor to carbon emissions and this is because raising cattle at the rate people eat it is one of the most inefficient uses of resources on the planet. Cattle produce a powerful greenhouse gas called methane (CH4) through their waste which, when released at the current scale, is having a substantial negative result on our environment. Every molecule of methane is equivalent to twenty-three molecules of carbon dioxide (CO2), so although there is more CO2 in the atmosphere, CH4 is more toxic. Not only are the gas emissions from cattle stock a problem, but a vast amount of the Amazon rainforest has been cut down in order to grow cattle feed. “In the U.S. 47% of land is used for food production. 70% of that is just to grow feed for cattle … fruit, vegetables, nuts, is a percent (1%).” (‘Before the Flood’, 0.51.40.) This shows that we must cut back on beef consumption because not only would we reduce the amount of methane being released into the air, we could use all that land to feed more people. It does not seem debatable. Of course we would choose whatever feeds more individuals, right? Well, because so many people (mainly in America) eat beef, companies are making huge profits from us, therefore they can afford to continue this unethical cycle.

Another way we can fight climate change is by cutting back on our consumption of palm oil. This ingredient is often found in packaged foods and cosmetics because it is the cheapest vegetable oil in the world to grow and harvest. Many people unknowingly purchase palm oil in products and never take notice of where it comes from, when in fact the simple production of palm oil is destroying environments in Sumatra, Indonesia. The South East rainforest is being intentionally set alight to provide land for palm oil plantations. In 2015 a single forest fire would produce more carbon than all of the U.S. economy daily. (‘Before the Flood’, 0.48.49.) Not only does this release an astonishing amount of CO2 into the air, it destroys the habitats of many wild animals. It is the only place on Earth where tiger, elephant, orangutan, and rhinoceros can be found together in the wild. If this immense destruction continues, we will loose these animals and their homes. “The expansion of palm oil industry in Indonesia has taken over about 80% of our forests.” (‘Before the Flood’, 0.48.26.)

“While 98 percent of scientists are in firm agreement that human activity is the clear cause, well-funded groups persist in calling this a debate.” (Mirzoeff, 218.) It is absurd how this worldwide issue is constantly being avoided, yet the facts are clear. Thankfully there are people out there like DiCaprio and Bosch who have used their status to bring attention to climate change and the problems we face, not just for this generation but the future generations to come. Banksy, a famous street artist, is also known for bringing global concerns to light through his artwork (an example featured below). It is unfortunate that people overlook global warming, when all we need to do in hope of bettering our planet can be as simple a few dietary changes. We, as a species, are currently living in that second panel of ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’. We are taking the way we shape our world for granted, and continuously abusing and overpopulating our surroundings. The human race needs to wake up and think about whether Earth should be returned to the state it was once in, or if we continue toward the path of the third and final panel. But ultimately, it is up to us.

Mirzeoff Chapter 6 Response.

In the book 'How to See the World' by Nicholas Mirzoeff he brings up some incredible points in chapter 6 'The Changing World'. Hen discusses the level of change humans have caused during their time on Earth. What I find interesting about this chapter is how little we as a society hear about these extreme impacts on our planet. Social media platforms fail to deliver this hugely important message to people, so we have no choice but to ignore these continuous environmental disturbances. Although, as of late there have been documentaries and articles that have been acknowledged and heard because society want to listen. These sources have been mainly surrounding the topic of Climate Change, which is something that needs to be addressed, and quickly. It has been an issue that humans have caused to build up over many years now, and its all due to our extreme pollution that we give back to our environment. Climate change is causing ice to melt, therefore making water rise, and it's all due to humans, which brings me back to Mirzoeff's chapter 6. He discusses how we take out entire species in a matter of years and how we contaminate whole rivers killing fish and often ourselves. If we continue to use our Earth's resources poorly, our future generations will face the consequences. This is why I have chosen to do my next assignment on the topic of 'How we shape the natural world'.

There are chapters in this book that support how poorly humans treat the environment. I will take some facts from this book and relate to how changes have been made to the world for centuries, but explain how things are currently rapidly increasing in terms of Earth's possible destruction.

Source 2: DiCaprio, Leo. Stevens, Fisher. 'Before the Flood'.

An extremely recent documentary about climate change and how the government try and hide this catastrophic issue, but if enough people spoke up the world will fall in line and a positive change can be made. Again, explains human's poor use of Earth's resources and shows the impact that this has when taken to an extent.

Source 3: Guggerheim, Davis. 'An Inconvenient Truth'.

Another documentary about climate change that says it all there in the title. Shows that people are choosing to ignore this issue, but also relates a lot to politics and how they wrongly influence how we think and what we see. They control what information is available to us in terms of climate change and this impacts hugely on how much we know and how much we care about the topic.
